Spoetzl was founded in 1909 by brewer Kosmas Spoetzl who trained at a brewmaster school in Germany before immigrating to Canada and later to San Antonio where he co-leased a building with Oswald Petzold and started the K. Spoetzel Brewery. After fighting through prohibition and surviving the addition of several large beer-plants in Texas, such as Anheuser-Busch, Spoetzl was Bought by The Gambrinus Company in 1989 and incorporated as Shiner Brewing Company. Jimmy Mauric is now head Brew-master.
Shiner Light is a light Lager it has a golden yellow color and pours with a white head that dissipates quickly and leaves no lacing. There is also a light malt and hop taste and smell.
It’s not bad light lager but I’ve had better light beers, if I’m going to drink light beer I think I’d rather buy a cheaper beer like Bud Light, but why sacrifice flavor for money? After all isn’t the point of light beer that you can drink more? I’m a beer drinker yes, but only a few a week, if my goal was to drink more alcohol at a lower calorie count I’d just have hard liquor. Besides with an ABV of 4% I’m left wondering…what’s the point?
